when choosing your outfit
for your lifestyle session, there are some general principles to consider.
The story. The message. The feeling.
Your engagement photos will often be used for your save-the-dates and on your official wedding website. This is the perfect opportunity to showcase your personalities together as a couple. Photographers will often encourage two outfits for engagement sessions, so that you have more variety when selecting your favorite photos to print or share with others. Using the general rules in my guide below, try and come up with two outfits that stay true to your style as a couple. Or take a risk and try a completely new outfit/style that you might not have considered before! Have fun with it.
Before choosing what to wear, consider what you envision creating with your photos. A beautiful display on your living room wall? Consider wearing colors that will coordinate with the style of your home. Holiday photo card? Add in festive touches or plan an in-home session to decorate the tree. I also find it helpful to choose one persons complete outfit first, and then build everyone else's off of that. Before you hit the mall (or Amazon), consider going through your closet first. You might surprise yourself with what you already own! That dress you bought on clearance last year with nowhere to wear it? Now might be the perfect time. Like I mention in the guide below, it is best to wear new or like-new items. Your favorite everyday outfit might be a little too lived-in. A good place to start is by asking your photographer for advice. And a message to anyone out there who made it this far - please save the cargo shorts and flip flops for a different day; it is not the vibe.
No matter the type of session, please remember that you are paying for a professional service, so it is important to look (and feel) the part! In addition to the guide below, I highly suggest checking out my Pinterest boards to find outfit inspiration!
